【明報專訊】Next time when you shop in a supermarket deciding what to get for dinner, take a look at four new vegetable varieties the Controlled Environment Hydroponic Research and Development Centre (全環控水耕研發中心) has successfully grown in Hong Kong. The Centre has introduced a new method of cultivating ice plants (冰菜), seedlings of broccoli, watercress (西洋菜) and Japanese mustard spinach (小松菜) (photo 2).

The Centre is a joint venture set up by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and the Vegetable Marketing Organisation (蔬菜統營處). It only takes 22 to 45 days to grow these vegetables. The new method allows of their production throughout the year and a shorter harvest period. Rich in nutrition and with unique tastes and textures, these vegetables are good choices for salads and side dishes.
