【明報專訊】A No.8 tropical cyclone signal (熱帶氣旋警告信號) was hoisted on 13 October 2020, as tropical storm Nangka (浪卡) moved near Hong Kong. How much do you know about the warning signals?

◆How many tropical cyclone warning signals are there?

There are 4 categories of No.8 signals, which indicate different wind directions.

◆How did the Hong Kong Observatory warn the public about an incoming typhoon in the past?

Starting from 1884, a typhoon gun was used. In 1907, explosive bombs replaced the gun as they made louder sounds, and the last bomb was exploded in 1937. In 1917, the first numbered signal system was introduced to warn the public about the wind conditions in Hong Kong .

◆Over the past 10 years, how many times has signal No.10 been issued?

3 times. The most recent one was in September 2018, when super typhoon Mangkhut (山竹) approached Hong Kong.
