【明報專訊】Talking to an AI system like one would with a close friend may have once seemed like a scenario only seen in movies, such as Ironman interacting with his assistant Jarvis. However, in today's world, this is a reality.
What is an AI companion?
An AI companion is an artificial intelligence program designed to simulate a conversation or interaction with a human user in a way that mimics a friendly or supportive relationship.
Through calculation and deep learning, these AI companions can provide emotional support, information, entertainment, and even companionship to users, forming relationships with them as thick as thieves.

In China, a recent exhibition showcased a companion robot designed to accompany family member at home, providing entertainment functions, AI chat features, and health data analysis.
In Japan, a senior care facility in Fukuoka utilized a cute boy-shaped ''Dai-Chan'' companion robot to interact with the elderly. Tests conducted have shown that these robots help in calming the anxiety of the elderly.
Although the AI companion may become useful in our daily life, it is essential to carefully consider the implications and societal impacts of their usage. The first concern about the usage of AI companions is the deterioration of human relationships as people may increasingly rely on AI companions for emotional support and companionship. Besides, there are ethical considerations regarding data privacy and the potential for AI companions to influence human behaviour in ways that may not align with societal values.
