【明報專訊】In many places around the world, citizens are obliged to join the military. Yet in Hong Kong, the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison(解放軍駐港部隊) is responsible for defence duties. Although being part of the military is not an option for Hong Kong citizens, we can learn how they are operated in different regions.
◆What are the requirements for joining the military?
THERE are different branches of the military, such as the army(陸軍), the navy(海軍), the air force(空軍) and the marines(海軍陸戰隊). They all have different standards, but primarily, you need to be within the age range. Taking the US military as an example, a person must be at least 17 to enlist in any branch of the military, but they cannot be over 34 if you want to join the army. They also need to take some educational and fitness tests to ensure that they are competent for the position.
◆Where are the military facilities in Hong Kong?
According to the laws in Hong Kong, 19 sites are declared as military areas(軍事用地). The map shows part of the closed areas. Can you fill in the blanks?
