【明報專訊】Despite living in one of the world's most modern cities, Hong Kong citizens enjoy the city's many country parks. Have you been to any of them?

How large is the countryside?

You might not know that around three quarters of Hong Kong land is countryside. The country parks and special areas cover a total area of 44,312 hectares. (1 hectare =0.01 km2)

A hiking trend started in Hong Kong, as it was considered a ''disease prevention activity'' during the pandemic. In March 2020, a group of employees shared photos of them hiking when they should have been working. The photos attracted public attention as well as their employer's. Warning letters were issued to them eventually.

How popular are the parks?

11 million visitors were recorded in 2019.

What are the hazards to country parks?

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD, 漁農自然護理署) collected over 2500 metric tons of litter in 2019 and 17 hill fires that might have threatened Country Parks were recorded.

What are marine parks?

There are 6 marine parks in Hong Kong. They are designated for conservation, education, recreation and scientific studies.
