【明報專訊】The Smarties have had problems getting public services. Why?

■English highway - sentences

The imperative mood

We use the imperative mood when we give orders, give instructions, make requests or give advice.

e.g.

Order: Stop talking!

Instruction: Go down the road and turn right.

Request: Please help me with my homework.

Advice: Be confident. It will be fine.

■Quiz

Underline the verbs in the imperative mood and tell whether the sentences are orders, instructions, pieces of advice or requests. (Hint: there may be more than one verb in the imperative mood in one sentence.)

(answers on next text)

1. Please pass me the salt.

2. Add hot water and let it stand three minutes before you eat it.

3. Sit properly when you read!

4. Sleep and drink a lot of water if you have caught a cold.
