 Culture:No gum in Singapore

【明報專訊】Eason likes to chew gum. He often spits the gum on the street which annoys others and causes hygienic problems. He gets away with that every time, but he won't be so lucky in a city-state that bans chewing gum.

“ Eason: Nom, nom, nom... ”

“ Eason: Do you want to buy chewing gum? I have got gum of different flavours! ”

“ Pat: Who is so inconsiderate? ”

“ Police officer: Selling unregistered chewing gum and spitting gum on the street are prohibited in Singapore. Come with me. ”

“ Dr Panda: You're in big trouble! ”

■ Culture tips

Chewing gum is prohibited in Singapore unless it is registered as a therapeutic product or dental gum. The ban started in 1992 and therapeutic chewing gum has only been allowed in the city-state since 2004. Anyone who sells or advertises the sale of chewing gum may be fined up to 2,000 Singapore Dollars (around 10,900 Hong Kong Dollars). Remember not to bring chewing gum or bubble gum to Singapore!
