Third conditional sentences

Third conditional sentences refer to situations in the past that are hypothetical or counterfactual.

The structure is:

"if + past perfect" and "would + perfect infinitive"

e.g. If you had told me that, I would have made better preparations.

We wouldn't have been late if we had caught the train.
