 Feature¡GLittle waiters and waitresses

¡i©ú³ø±M°T¡jHaving learnt table manners and restaurant-related vocabulary in their English classes, primary 4 students of Cho Yiu Catholic Primary School want to put what they have learnt into practice. They have invited their principal and teachers to a lunch party!

¡»Task 1 : Taking orders

It is rush hour now! Before they take their orders, the waiters and waitresses tell their guests about the menu.

¡§ Student A : Set A is a crispy bacon and onion cheeseburger. Set B is a grilled chicken and avocado burger. Both sets come with fries. ¡¨

¡»Task 2 : During the wait

While the chef and his colleagues are preparing the meals, the waiters and waitresses serve their guests drinks.

¡§ Student B : Here is your hot lemon tea. ¡¨

¡»Task 3: Finding the fries

Here come the meals! They smell mouthwatering. But hold on! Some dishes are without French fries!

¡§ Student C : Manager, some guests don't have fries. ¡¨

¡§ Manager : I will let the chef know. ¡¨

¡§ Chef : The fries are done. Don't forget to put them on the plates before you take them out! ¡¨

¡§ Students : Yes, chef! ¡¨

¡»Time to eat!

The waiters and waitresses are happy seeing their guests' happy faces.

¡§ Teacher : I love burgers! Yum! ¡¨

¡»Tips from the team

Having served their guests, the waiters and waitresses have a chat with the Smarties. A food's taste is as important as its nutrition. What do they think about eating and cooking? Let's hear their conversation!

¡§ Pat: Have you had any funny experience with school meals? ¡¨

¡§ Kacy Leung : I surely have! Once I ordered Japanese curry, which is usually sweet, but I was served a dish that was very spicy. I washed it down with water and finished it. ¡¨

¡§ Pat: I'll tell you what, I don't like lunch boxes from my school's caterer. They taste awful. ¡¨

¡§ Bernice Li : Same here. Sometimes I don't like the main course, but it somehow tastes better when I pair it with side dishes. ¡¨

¡§ Bill: Do your parents tell you what to eat? ¡¨

¡§ Kaci Ki : My parents are not strict about my diet. Yet they advise me not to eat too much sweet stuff at night. ¡¨

¡§ MoMo: Sometimes I want a snack between meals. I'm not sure what to eat. ¡¨

¡§ Carl Kwok : I often have fruits for snacks, especially grapes. They are healthier than chocolates and crisps. ¡¨

¡§ Dr Panda: Do you cook? ¡¨

¡§ Evan Lee : Yes, I often follow recipes, though I may try variations. ¡¨

¡½English highway¡R-ess

The suffix "-ess" often shows that what the noun refers to is female. Examples other than "waitress" include "actress", "goddess" and "princess".

¡½Game
