Talk of the town:The Bauhaus style

[2021.09.08] 發表

【明報專訊】Bauhaus was a German art school. As a style it is famous for simple but functional design features.

Completed in 1962, Choi Hung Estate (彩虹h) literally means ''the village of rainbow''. Some say it was so named because of the rainbow that frequently appeared nearby after rain. As a result, the adjacent MTR station and the area are called ''Choi Hung''. The Bauhaus style was adopted. The outer walls were painted in the seven colours of the rainbow.

Built in 1955, Shek O Bus Terminus (石澳巴士總站) was rated Grade Ⅱ historic building. The simple Bauhaus design makes it look like an old opera house. It fell into disrepair with peeling concrete and is now full of garbage. Some have called for revitalisation, but the authorities have instead rented it to a bus company.

Located in Sham Shui Po, Garden Centre (嘉頓中心) was completed in 1935 and expanded in 1958. Its Bauhaus style lend it a factory-like feel of practicality. Its clock tower reminded many people when to take the ferry. The bakery would like to rebuild it, but many hoped to preserve it. The authorities rated it Grade Ⅱ historic building only to keep parts of the clock tower, the exterior wall and the two signs.
